Why does glass need anti-static protection?

Glass is inherently an electrical insulator. Through friction, handling, or contact with other materials, it can easily accumulate static electricity, which is difficult to dissipate once generated. As a result, static-charged glass readily attracts dust and may discharge to nearby objects, producing electrical current or even sparks. In environments where airborne dust or flammable gases are present, such discharges can significantly increase the risk of explosions and fires. In semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing, electrostatic discharge (ESD) may also damage sensitive devices and ultra-fine circuitry, leading to defects or yield loss. Therefore, facilities with these risks should use anti-static glass that does not readily build up static charge and can effectively dissipate accumulated electrostatic charges, thereby preventing unnecessary hazards and ensuring safer operation.

Disadvantages of transparent anti-static plastic sheets/panels:

Because anti-static glass has historically been difficult to obtain, transparent anti-static plastic films or plastic panels have often been used as substitutes. However, practical use has revealed several notable drawbacks:

Poor coating hardness and adhesion: The applied anti-static coating typically has low hardness and weak bonding strength. As a result, routine wiping or abrasion can easily cause scratches, surface hazing, and coating delamination, which undermines both transparency and anti-static performance.
Flammability and safety concerns: Plastic is inherently combustible and generally lacks fire-resistant or flame-retardant properties, creating safety risks in applications where fire prevention is critical.
Deformation and poor flatness: Plastic panels are prone to bending and warping. When used in doors or windows, they often fail to maintain adequate flatness, negatively affecting visual clarity, appearance, and overall aesthetics.
